Final BTCC weekend of the year and the championship still had not been decided. Whatever was to happen, it was going to be an exciting weekend for everyone involved in the series, from drivers and teams to the spectators.
Saturday was a real struggle for me as the GP track is one that requires a lot of experience, which I lack on this circuit. This made it difficult to improve the car, because as a driver I had to develop a lot within myself. I also wasn’t happy with the feel of the steering and brakes, and in turn qualified in a very disappointing 22nd position.
For Race 1, we easily could have climbed more places than we did, but I chose to keep backing off for space in an attempt for a good lap, (fastest lap times decide the grid positions for Race 2), but struggled to really put our ideal lap together. We ended up finishing in 14th.
Race 2 we were on the soft tyres and looked to capitalise on the extra grip for the early stages of the race, but then I suffered a power steering failure on the warm up lap due to a connector melting, and had to put back in to the pits before rejoining a lap down, and in turn finished the race in 24th.
Race 3, although I started in 24th, I got a very good start and battled hard all race, making our way up to 13th which I was very happy with. Of course that final race was the championship decider, and all eyes were on Jason Plato and Gordon Shedden. So congratulations to Gordon for taking this year’s title.
I can’t believe that the season is over already! It’s been a roller coaster year for Laser Tools Racing with some big lows such as the Snetterton crash, but also great highs like Knockhill. This was always going to be another year with a steep learning curve and our aim was to get top-ten finishes with at least one top-five, so to achieve that together with an independent win and a podium at my home round on top, it has definitely been a successful year!
Massive thank you to all of my sponsors, my team, family and of course the fans and marshals too. Time to get 2016 plans sorted!
